MejorsolaMejor Sola Que...'Moving On' Songs and Dichos

Arte Sana's latest Pinterest board, "Mejor sola que...'Moving on' songs and dichos," includes a collection of songs in Spanish and visuals of inspirational dichos (sayings) for moving on and leaving dysfunctional and abusive relationships.

Many factors contribute to the ongoing underreporting of domestic or intimate partner abuse by Latina victims/survivors. The lack of awareness of victim rights and the law, distrust of law enforcement in the U.S. and abroad, the lack of available bilingual and bicultural staff/programs, financial dependence, mixed residency status families, as well as the fear of losing their children make some* Latinas pledge unconditional allegiance to their partners.

Religious and cultural beliefs that prohibit basic reproductive rights, place those who suffer intimate partner rape and reproductive coercion at high risk for revictimization. Cultural and family influences that place value on maternal self-sacrifice, and the pressure to keep families intact at all cost contribute to a repetitive leave/return process as Latina survivors struggle to break free from violence.

Helping survivors claim their human right to visualize and live a life free from violence is part of the healing process, but addressing relationship criteria and gendered double standards before abuse occurs is key. The use of popular culture tools such as dichos, telenovelas, and songs can aid in discussing the implications of many assumptions and popular culture themes such as "el amor verdadero no se rinde ante el dolor" (real love does not give up in the face of pain).

For this reason, the newest Arte Sana Pinterest Board includes a collection of songs previously used within small group pláticas and workshops, those recommended by promotoras and advocates, 'repins' of sayings on this theme from boards created by Latinas, and links to resources. Arte Sana will offer a 'how to' workshop on survivor empowerment via Pinterest during the 2014 Nuestras Voces Conference that will be held in Padre, Island TX next year. Conference update below!

* The Latin@/Hispanic population in the U.S. is the largest and most diverse ethnic group when it comes to ideology (conservative/traditional to liberal/progressive), residency (recent immigrants to families that had the border cross them) and language, so generalizations should be carefully avoided when developing materials and planning outreach efforts.

Board1Gracias Melina

& Congratulations Rosa!
Melina Castillo

Our heartfelt gracias to outgoing Arte Sana Board President Melina Castillo, who has served in this capacity and has guided Arte Sana's survival through massive changes and downsizing. Melina's activist spirit was evident from the beginning, as she took her experience within the first Nuestras Voces conference in 2005 to model a Latin@-specific conference in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as co-founder of the Latinos Against Domestic Violence conference. After joining the Arte Sana boardMelina supported our work throughout intensive conference planning years and challenging phases that might have led to the dissolution of
Rosa Herrin
most other nonprofits. We will forever be grateful for her unyielding support.
Small action driven agencies such as Arte Sana require a special kind of
compromiso or commitment and our very existence these past 12.5 years (with and without funding) as a Latina-led agency has depended on our board member activist spirit. We are especially thankful for our current members who will help Arte Sana reach its quinceañera in 2016.

Leading the way will be Rosa Herrin, Arte Sana's new board president. Rosa has served on the Arte Sana Board in various capacities since 2010. She has not only supported Arte Sana's work through three Nuestras Voces conferences, she has also shared her expertise as a presenter --and like Melina-- is proud of her raices peruanas!

On November 25, 1960, three Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic were violently assassinated during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. In 1981, the first Feminist Encuentro for Latin America and the Caribbean held in Bogota, Colombia declared November 25th as a commemoration date for ending all forms of violence against women. In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25th as the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women' and this date also initiates the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (11/25 - 12/10).
