Nuestras voces/Our Voices: Wise Latinas en la lucha

Previous Girl Empowerment Festivals and Partners:

Arte Sana's bilingual Girl Empowerment Festival model offers communities a unique collaboration opportunity to promote girl safety locally. It is a multigenerational gathering of girls, young women, mothers, aunts, and grandmothers, that addresses issues such as body image, dating and sexual violence prevention, victim rights, media literacy, cultural identity, and teen pregnancy prevention. From 2004 to 2009, over 526 Texans have attended bilingual Girl Empowerment Festivals: 486 girls and 40 adults. In 2010, this gender-specific outreach model was implemented in Wyoming.

At the heart of the Girl Empowerment Festival is inter-agency and multi-disciplinary community collaboration for a customized girl conference that addresses violence prevention through a holistic approach. Each Girl Empowerment Festival (GEF) is planned in accordance with local needs and interests in mind. The GEF locations have varied in each region from Gateway Community Center in Laredo, the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, to the Head Start Administrative Building in El Paso. In 2009, the GEF sessions were taken to 150 girls in two middle schools due to the H1N1 virus. Each GEF has been made possible with the dedication of local planning committee members, and the professionalism and flexibility of volunteer presenters who are local and state experts with the various selected empowerment topics.
